Essence vs. Serum vs. Toner: What's the Difference and Do You Need All Three?

Toner mist, essence and serum textures side by side with saffron threads

Quick answer: A toner preps and rebalances skin right after cleansing. An essence is a lightweight hydration layer that helps skin absorb what follows. A serum is a concentrated treatment that targets a specific concern, such as fine lines or dullness. Apply them in that order: toner, then essence, then serum, followed by moisturizer. You don't need all three, but each does a different job.

What is a toner?

Old-school toners were alcohol-heavy astringents used to remove leftover cleanser. Today there are two main kinds:

  • Hydrating toners add a first, weightless layer of moisture and comfort. They're gentle enough for twice-daily use.
  • Exfoliating toners contain acids such as glycolic or salicylic acid and are usually used a few times a week.

N° 02 Saffron Mist is a hydrating toner in mist form: witch hazel water, aloe and hyaluronic acid with saffron extract and two peptides. It contains no exfoliating acids, so it can be used morning, night and as a midday refresh.

A weightless peptide toner mist with saffron, aloe and hyaluronic acid. 30 mL.

What is an essence?

Essences come from Korean and Japanese skincare, where they're considered a core step. They're thinner than serums but more concentrated than toners, and their job is deep hydration. Well-hydrated skin is more supple and helps serums spread evenly.

N° 03 Renewal Essence is built on snail secretion filtrate with hyaluronic acid, panthenol, allantoin and betaine. Learn more in Snail Mucin for Skin.

What is a serum?

Serums are the treatment step. They carry the highest concentration of active ingredients in a lightweight base. Choose a serum based on your main concern:

  • Fine lines and firmness: peptides (especially copper peptides) or retinoids
  • Dullness and uneven tone: vitamin C or niacinamide
  • Dehydration: hyaluronic acid

N° 04 Copper Concentrate combines copper tripeptide-1 with five more peptides. See our copper peptides guide for how to use it.

Do you need a toner, essence and serum?

Not necessarily. Here's a simple way to decide:

  • Minimal routine: cleanser, hydrating toner or mist, moisturizer, sunscreen. This is the core of The Essentials Ritual ($178, save 10%).
  • Targeted routine: add a serum for your main concern.
  • Full routine: add an essence if your skin is dry, dehydrated or looks dull, or if you want the most comfortable base for your serum. The Complete Ritual includes all five steps ($282, save $50).

If you're choosing just one of the three, pick the serum for targeted results or the toner for daily comfort.

How to layer toner, essence and serum

  1. Cleanse with N° 01 Cleansing Milk and pat skin until slightly damp.
  2. Mist or pat on toner.
  3. Press in a few drops of essence.
  4. Apply serum.
  5. Seal with moisturizer such as N° 05 Rich Cream. Add sunscreen in the morning.

Wait until each layer feels mostly absorbed (about 30–60 seconds). Full details are in our skincare routine order guide.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an essence and a serum?

An essence is a lightweight hydrating layer applied before serum. A serum is more concentrated and targets a specific concern, such as fine lines or dullness.

What's the difference between a toner and an essence?

A toner is thinner and preps skin right after cleansing. An essence is slightly more concentrated and focuses on deep hydration.

Which comes first: toner, essence or serum?

Toner first, then essence, then serum, then moisturizer.

Can I use an essence instead of a toner?

You can, but they do different jobs. A toner preps skin; an essence hydrates. If you only want one, choose based on whether your skin needs balancing or more moisture.

Can I use a serum without an essence?

Yes. An essence is optional. Serums work on their own, applied after cleansing and toning.

Is a face mist the same as a toner?

Many face mists are hydrating toners in spray form. N° 02 Saffron Mist is used as the toner step in the Hello Evy ritual.
